Renzo Zavanella Italian, 1900-1988

"He sensed the potential of design, typified by construction's sincerity and new materials' expressiveness, outside the conventional interior real."

Career

Renzo Zavanella began his career working in the studio of Gio Ponti and Emilio Lancia where he designed works that were characterised by expressive forms and three-dimensional sculptural qualities. As can be seen in many of his designs, Zavanella’s work was also greatly influenced by his ergonomic studies and public transportation. At the 1948 Milan Fair, Zavanella exhibited his interior designs for a new railcar travelling from Milan to San Remo. The wide seat and curved shape of the railcar’s form, which Zavanella incorporated into his furniture designs, allowed the sitter greater flexibility and comfort. In Zavanella's eyes, this encapsulated the great budding potential that railway travel presented to Italy and the modern world.
